Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is in western South America and bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. The country’s landscape ranges from the plains of the Pacific coasts, to the peaks of the Andes and the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest with the Amazon River.

Lima is the capital and Peru’s largest city located in the central coastal area next to the Pacific Ocean. Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535, as Ciudad de los Reyes. Today, Lima is the third largest city in the Americas and home to the National University of San Marcos, founded in 1551, the oldest continuously operating university in the Americas.
Among the architectural gems of Peru is the fascinating Machu Picchu, an Incan citadel high in the Andes Mountains situated above the Urubamba River valley. Built in the 15th century, believed to be an estate for the Inca Emperor Pachacuti (1438-1472), it is known for its construction of dry stone walls that fuse huge blocks without the use of mortar, buildings with astronomical alignments and spectacular views. The Convento de San Francisco (St Francis Monastery, including the church and conven,t are part of the Historic Centre of Lima. The monastery, in the Spanish Baroque style, (consecrated in 1673 and complete in 1774) also contains a library and catacombs.
The Nazca Lines in southern Peru are a group of pre-Columbian geoglyphs etched into desert sands, which cover nearly 1,000 sq. kilometers. There are about 300 different figures, including animals and plants. The series of ancient geoglyphs in the Nazca Desert are designat a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
